5.7 quake rattles nerves in border region – Adidas

June 16th, 2010 — 9:19am

San Diego County Office of Emergency Services had no reports of significant damage. Louis Fuentes, chairman of the Imperial County board of supervisors, also said he had no immediate reports of damage.

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake "could break windows, it could throw things on the floor, it could create cracks on the wall, but we don’t expect things to collapse," Hauksson said.

San Diego County sheriff’s dispatch supervisor Becky Strahm said some of her colleagues reported things falling off their shelves, but there were no immediate reports of significant damage or injury.

SAN DIEGO – The U.S.-Mexico border was rocked by a christian audigier wholesale magnitude-5.7 earthquake Monday night, rattling nerves in a region still recovering from the deadly Easter jolt.

"As soon as it hit, my wife said, ‘Grab the baby.’ My daughter ran out to the back yard," said Fuentes, who was in his garage in Calexico, about 30 miles east of the epicenter. "It thumped really hard."

"Aftershocks can go on for months and years," he said.

The quake was felt as a gentle rolling motion in the Los Angeles area.

Thousands of aftershocks have occurred since the Easter christian audigier wholesale earthquake. More than 100 aftershocks were recorded immediately following Monday’s 5.7 quake, with the largest measuring at magnitude-4.5.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered five miles southeast of Ocotillo in Imperial County — about 85 miles east of San Diego. It struck Monday at 9:26 p.m. PDT.

"All the lamps, the liquor bottles and the TV hanging from the christian audigier wholesale ceiling shook, but nothing dropped," said Marina Garcia, an employee at the Burgers and Beer restaurant in El Centro, about 30 miles east of Ocotillo.

Fuentes said his chandeliers swayed at his home and metal objects banged but nothing fell off the shelves. Imperial County suffered significant damage in April’s Easter Sunday quake.

The quake was an aftershock of the deadly Easter Sunday magnitude-7.2 quake that shook Baja California and Southern California, said Egill Hauksson, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He said the epicenter of Monday’s quake occurred in the same zone of the quake in April.

The quake followed a series of temblors that struck Southern California over the weekend,Adidas, including a pair of moderate earthquakes that rattled a desert area east of San Diego. Residents in downtown San Diego felt the ground rumbling during at least one of the Saturday quakes.

San Diego’s Petco Park swayed during the quake, causing a momentary pause at the Toronto Blue Jays-San Diego Padres game. The public address announcer asked that everyone remain calm. The crowd cheered.

David Eckstein of the Padres had just grounded out in the bottom of the inning when the stadium began shaking. The next batter, Chase Headley, stayed out of the batter’s box for a few seconds, then stepped in.

Associated Press Sports Writer Bernie Wilson in San Diego and Associated Press writers Alicia Chang,Primp, Daisy Nguyen and Denise Petski in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

Director Nichols adds AFI honor to long prize r -

June 13th, 2010 — 12:54pm

CULVER CITY, Calif. – Julia Roberts hurled a four-letter word at Mike Wholesale Abercrombie Fitch Nichols to get things rolling for the American Film Institute’s life-achievement honor for the director.

Thompson related the first time she heard Nichols laugh, during a rehearsal for "Primary Colors." She said Nichols went from a wheeze to a deadly sounding cough, then back to a wheeze before tears began streaming from his eyes, and she worried, "Is he dying?"

"I realized that this kind of laughter was nothing to do with mere humor," Thompson said. "This laughter was like good sex in a way. It existed to atomize the world, which then perforce had to reconstruct itself in a slightly improved form. And I feel whenever we laugh like that, that somewhere or other, fascism and humbug die a little."

In Nichols’ honor, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sang "Mrs. Robinson," one of their tunes from "The Graduate." Eric Idle, Nichols’ collaborator on his Tony-winning "Spamalot," sang "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from "Monty Python’s Life of Brian" — dressed as an angel with towering wings.

The tribute to Nichols airs June 26 on TV Land.

"Mike is one of the few people in the world who’s an `egot,’" Roberts, the star of Nichols’ films "Closer" and "Charlie Wilson’s War," said Thursday night to open the star-studded tribute. "It means he’s won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony."

Introduced by Streep at the end of the evening, Nichols gushed thanks for his costume designers, cinematographers, script supervisors, makeup artists, composers and other associates.

"As a little kid in a sometimes hard place, I went to the movies as often as I could," Nichols said. "Movies — making them, seeing them — is not something that could ever lose its pleasure for me. That puts them on a short list of things that eternally give me joy — love, family, food, movies."

"If I thanked everyone who contributed importantly over the years, we would be here until Miley Cyrus’ AFI award," Nichols said. "All of you made me feel I got away with it. I love the process of making a movie, and doing it with all of you was — despite the fear, the pressure, the budget — happiness."

"I remember on `Silkwood’ once, you said to me, `You know, directing is like making love,’" Streep told Nichols. "And I said, ‘Eww, I don’t even know him that well. Why is he telling me this?’

The role was a career-maker, earning Hoffman his first Oscar nomination.

Thompson — the star of Nichols’ Emmy-winning "Wit" and a co-star in his film "Primary Colors" as well as "Angels in America" — and Robin Williams, who worked with the director on "The Birdcage," devoted time to analyzing the filmmaker’s laugh.

Roberts actually was shortchanging Nichols. Along with his best-director Academy Award for "The Graduate" and his Grammy for a comedy album with former partner Elaine May, Nichols is a multiple winner for the top honors on television and the stage — four Emmys, eight Tonys.

Nichols, a Jew born in Berlin in 1931, fled Nazi Germany in the late 1930s with his family and emigrated to America.

___

Dustin Hoffman recalled how he felt he was too small and Jewish to play the tall, athletic, WASP-ish lead in "The Graduate," and that Nichols told him, "well, maybe he’s Jewish inside."

Online:

"’Because,’ you went on, ‘you never know if you’re doing it right or as well as the other guy,’" recalled Streep, who besides "Silkwood" also starred in Nichols’ "Postcards from the Edge," "Heartburn" and his Emmy-winning miniseries "Angels in America." "I just found that insecurity so completely disarming, and, well, you know, I started to fall in love with you over and over and over again."

American Film Institute: http://www.afi.com

"Heartburn" co-star Jack Nicholson, whose films with Nichols include "Carnal Knowledge," "The Fortune" and "Wolf,BBC," had the audience in stitches with his cryptic but loving remarks about the filmmaker.

From his earliest days, films have been one of his principle pastimes, he said.

The dinner honoring the 78-year-old Nichols, held in a Sony Pictures soundstage where part of "The Wizard of Oz" was filmed, featured clips from his movies and TV programs,Coach, a highlight from his and May’s 1960s comedy act, musical numbers and speeches overflowing with hilarious anecdotes and bottomless affection from his collaborators.

"I have to say, remember, Mike, even oysters have enemies," Nicholson enigmatically told Nichols.

"I thank you for casting this short, 29-year-old unknown actor with a prominent nose," Hoffman told Nichols.

"That’s the most wonderful thing, to get a laugh from you," Williams said. "Because it’s a great laugh. It’s a combination, it’s like all of a sudden, a little boy erupts out of this brilliant man."

"What doesn’t Mike do?" Roberts told the audience, filled with Wholesale Abercrombie Fitch such Nichols collaborators as Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Warren Beatty, Emma Thompson, Harrison Ford, Shirley MacLaine and Natalie Portman. "Everything about Mike makes everything about everything just better."

From 3 to college, kids bonkers for plastic ba – B

June 10th, 2010 — 11:32am

"I love these things," he said, spending about $25 of his $80 stash on several packs, including dragons and sports equipment. "We trade them at school now."

The bracelets have been banned at some schools, including Marino’s, because kids snap them at each other like rubber bands and, according to his mother,Bape, teachers said they’re distracting. Other parents said hard feelings over trades gone bad have led to grabbing and tears.

Zanybandz bracelets are now sold to about 8,000 stores across the country, said co-owner Lori Montag, of Broken Arrow, Okla.

The average price for a pack of 24 is $5. Once taken off the wrist, they bounce christian audigier wholesale back into shape, which is another feature kids like.

"It’s very hard for me to understand it," Lampo said. "I see it as being just rubber bands."

"It touches on some of the classic attributes that make kids toys appealing," she said. "Nothing lasts forever, but I think it’s going to be around for a while. It’s fun, they’re reasonably priced, they’re collectible, there’s a lot of ways they can be used."

"Not only is it attracting a lot of kids, but its attracting kids that normally wouldn’t be caught in a toy store," he said.

Manufacturers and shop owners said the craze is spreading so quickly that it’s hard to keep up. The array — from animals and pirates, to roses and water creatures — have turned some playgrounds into swap meets. Makers are constantly thinking up new shapes and colors to keep the interest high.

"I am willing to bet maybe the end of the summer," he said. "But it’s very likely to be something else when back-to-school time comes around."

Marks sells the bands for $4.99 in packs of 24. There are other brands as well, including Silly Bandz, Bama Bandz and Logo Bandz, which use shapes from major sports, colleges and popular attractions and entertainments like Disney and Marvel Comics.

Such activity involving the specially shaped bracelets in vogue now around the United States hasn’t surfaced.

Robin Sayetta, vice president of licensing for the children’s christian audigier wholesale magazine Highlights, said the trend incorporates a lot of things children care about.

"It’s a very unique phenomenon. There is no marketing," he said. "I have never seen anything like it." His company is selling more than half a million packages a day — and rising.

"Now I am noticing kids, instead of putting them on their wrists, they are getting a necklace and putting it on their neck," Rivera said. "The kids are just going crazy for these things."

David Marks, who does the ordering at his wife Alice’s two Learning Express stores in Connecticut, said sales have more than doubled over the last three weeks. On one Saturday alone, about 800 packs were sold between the two stores.

Michael Lewis, owner of Forever Collectibles based in Edison, N.J., makes Logo Bandz. He said the craze started in America about a year ago but has been going on in Asia for several years.

"It’s an enormous boon to our business," he said. "It’s been a tough two years, but this has resulted in business beyond my wildest imagination."

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Eleven-year-old Erich Marino saved up his birthday money for a cool new toy: little silicone bracelets in an array of shapes that have kids from toddlers to college going bonkers around the country.

Peter Rivera, owner of Patty’s Hallmark in Hollywood, Fla., where Marino and his sister Isabella bought their Zanybandz,Miss Sixty, said children started asking for them in January. He sold 240 packs the first week he got them in stock and just put in an order for 1,000 packs he hopes will last a week.

When he first sold the bracelets at his Fad Banditz kiosks, Terry Lampo in Brentwood, Tenn., figured his market was going to be elementary school girls. Turns out it’s not just girls, and not just grade schoolers.

Marks compares the bracelets to the mid-’90s Beanie Babies craze. "I think its a very low tech item in a very high tech society," he said.

In Brazilian cities, a more traditional stretchy style of cheap band that comes in numerous bright colors has been banned from schools after it surfaced that they were being used to indicate sexual activity. The bracelets reportedly have been linked to a game where hugging, kissing and other acts are expected when different colored bands are broken off the christian audigier wholesale wrists of teens.

Chris Byrne, an independent toy analyst and content director for timetoplaymag.com, said the trend, like others, has an expiration date.

EU says China’s trade policies still too opaq – Gu

June 2nd, 2010 — 8:23pm

GENEVA (AFP) – The European Union on Monday criticised China Wholesale ed hardy during a World Trade Organization review of Beijing’s trade policies, complaining that they remain somewhat opaque.

"China’s disregard to some of our questions during the last TPR (trade policy review) in 2008, and the submission of the related replies two years later … is certainly regrettable.

Highlighting the transparency issues, Clarke noted that Wholesale ed hardy China replied only this year to questions the EU had tabled during the last trade policy review at the WTO two years ago.

"Despite various bold reforms undertaken in the run-up to, and during the first years after China’s WTO accession, the level of state interference in the economy is still Wholesale ed hardy noticeable and less and less compatible with China’s level of economic development," said Clarke.

"There remain important transparency deficiencies in China’s trade regime," the head of the EU delegation John Clarke said in a statement.

"In fact, our companies have reported a worsening of the business climate," the EU envoy added in the statement which was read at a closed-door WTO meeting on China’s trade policy.

"This is a serious systemic concern," he added.

Chinese officials have not yet circulated a meeting statement.

In addition, he criticised China’s enforcement of intellectual property protection,Juicy Couture tracksuits, saying that more effective control and criminal prosecutions were needed.

"Even though China reiterates its firm commitment to continued opening up and reform — we find the word reform almost about 30 times in China’s government report — we believe this does not duly characterise the current situation in China," he noted.

Clarke also highlighted Beijing’s regulation of trade, such as a certification scheme for foreign exporters which he described as a "major obstacle … due to the complexity, costs and length of the procedure."

DOJ, Arizona officials meet over immigration law -

May 29th, 2010 — 11:50am

A number of other states are considering laws similar to Arizona’s.

Goddard said he noted that five privately filed lawsuits John Galliano already are pending in federal court to challenge the law.

Justice Department spokesman Matthew Miller noted that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder met with a number of police chiefs Wednesday in Washington "to hear their concerns about the impact of the Arizona law on their ability to keep communities safe.

The Justice Department initiated separate meetings by phone Wholesale juicy couture and face-to-face in Phoenix with Goddard and aides to Republican Gov. Jan Brewer to reach out to Arizona’s leaders and elicit information from state officials regarding the Obama administration’s concerns about the new law.

Brewer, who is seeking re-election, later said in a statement that her legal team told the Justice Department officials that the law would be "vigorously defended all the way to the United States Supreme Court if necessary."

"We continue to have concerns that the law drives a wedge between law enforcement and the communities they serve and are examining it to see what options are available to the federal government," Miller said.

Brewer’s office declined immediate comment.

Brewer, who has hired private attorneys to represent her in John Galliano the pending cases, expressed unease with Goddard’s willingness to defend the law.

"While Senate Bill 1070 is far from perfect, it is a response to a very serious problem," Goddard said. "I told the lawyers that it would be just plain wrong for the federal government to sue to stop Arizona from dealing with something that the federal government has ignored for so many years."

The department officials, Brewer said, "were advised that I believe the federal government should use its legal resources to fight illegal immigration, not the state of Wholesale juicy couture Arizona."

Federal officials and other critics fear the state law could lead to widespread racial profiling.

Goddard said it would be wrong to assume that Arizona law enforcement officers would not act in a fair and highly professional manner."

"I told them we need solutions from Washington, not more lawsuits," said Attorney General Terry Goddard, a Democrat.

The federal officials’ trip to Phoenix also was an effort to see if the two sides can find common ground in the debate, which has reignited immigration as a major political issue nationwide.

The strong message that the Justice Department representatives delivered at the private meetings — first with Goddard, then with Brewer’s staff — left little doubt that the Obama administration is prepared to go to court if necessary in a bid to block the new law, which takes effect July 29.

Key provisions of the sweeping law include a requirement that police enforcing any other law question people about their immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that the people are in the country illegally. It also makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally.

Arizona has an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants, and the law’s supporters contend it will save taxpayer money and reduce crime by pressuring illegal immigrants to "self-deport."

While numerous police chiefs have criticized the law, several Arizona associations representing rank-and-file police officers support it.

Goddard earlier vowed to defend it.

"Every possible argument is being briefed," said Goddard, who is running unopposed for his party’s nomination for the governor’s race.

PHOENIX – Justice Department officials told Arizona’s attorney Wholesale juicy couture general and aides to the governor Friday that the federal government has serious reservations John Galliano about the state’s new immigration law. They responded that a lawsuit against the state isn’t the answer.

WH had Clinton try to ease Sestak out of Pa. race

May 29th, 2010 — 11:50am

The admission left many questions unanswered, however, and Republicans aren’t likely to let the issue rest. For Obama, the revelations called into question his repeated promises to run an open government that was above back room deals.

Emanuel and Sestak both worked in the White House when Clinton was president in the 1990s, and both remain close with their former boss. Sestak was a supporter of Clinton’s wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, in her 2008 presidential bid.

Specter declined to comment.

In a statement released by his campaign, Sestak said, "I said no. I told President Clinton that my only consideration in getting into the Senate race or not was whether it was the right thing to do for Pennsylvania working families and not any offer."

Sestak declined the offer. He defeated the five-term Specter, who had switched from Republican to Democrat last year at the White House’s urging, in the May Cheap Abercrombie 18 Democratic primary.

Presidential Counsel Robert Bauer rendered his own verdict in a two-page report that said there was no improper conduct. No one in the administration discussed the offer with Sestak, Bauer said. The report did not say what, if any, contacts or promises the White House had with Specter on the matter. It also did not reveal whether Obama was aware of the former president’s role.

The report said White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel enlisted Clinton’s help as a go-between with Sestak. Clinton agreed to raise the offer of a seat on a presidential advisory board or another executive board if Sestak dropped his bid, "which would avoid a divisive Senate primary," the report said.

Sestak, who had said a job was offered but had provided no details, acknowledged Friday that he had had the conversation with Clinton. He said the former president told him he should stay in the U.S. House and perhaps join a presidential board.

For weeks, the White House had insisted officials did not Cheap Abercrombie behave inappropriately but had declined to elaborate. But after Sestak won the nomination, Republicans renewed their questions of the administration and White House lawyers prepared to release a report they had been compiling for months.

"I can assure the public that nothing improper took place," he said.

Seeking to quiet the clamor from Republicans and some Democrats over a possible political trade, the White House released a report describing the offer that Cheap Abercrombie was intended to clear a path for Sen. Arlen Specter to win the Democratic nomination.

"Regardless of what President Clinton or Congressman Sestak now say, it is abundantly clear that this kind of conduct is contrary to President Obama’s pledge to change ‘business as usual’ and that his administration has engaged in the kind of political shenanigans he once campaigned to end," said Rep. Darrell Issa, the top Republican on the House oversight committee who unsuccessfully had sought a Department of Justice investigation.

The report didn’t impress Republicans.

Under the proposed arrangement, Sestak would have been able to remain in the House while serving on a board. It was not clear why the White House — which has the power to offer Cabinet posts and sought-after embassy jobs — believed Sestak would be interested in just an advisory position.

WASHINGTON – Forced to disclose backstage political Cheap Abercrombie bargaining, President Barack Obama’s embarrassed White House acknowledged on Friday that it enlisted Bill Clinton to try to ease Rep. Joe Sestak out of Pennsylvania’s Senate primary with a job offer.

Bauer, in the White House report, argued that previous Democratic and Republican administrations, "motivated by the same goals, discussed alternative paths to service for qualified individuals also considering campaigns for public office." The report said such actions aren’t illegal nor unethical.

At a White House news conference on Thursday, Obama told reporters a full accounting would be forthcoming.

Two top Democrats — party chief Tim Kaine and Dick Durbin of Illinois, the party’s second-ranking leader in the Senate — said during the week that the White House and Sestak needed to address the questions. So, too, did Sestak’s Republican challenger in Pennsylvania, former Rep. Pat Toomey.
